Anti Aging

Anti Aging is not just about wrinkle reduction. It is a whole industry designed to assist you to achieve the lifestyle you want – so that you can live healthy, happy, beautiful and for longer.

As the pace of life increases and as we get older we may begin to look back at times of our life when we were happier, felt better and younger. There are three generally accepted definitions of our age:
• Chronological Age: how old we are in years – from the date of our birth
• Biological Age: how your body is aging – our brain, our cardiovascular system, our joints etc
• Psychological Age: how old do you feel?

Anti Aging addresses medical and psychological methods to reduce your aging as well as scientific approaches such as breakthroughs in research, genetic and tissue engineering. The ways to slow the aging process can be through:
• Nutrition
• Physical fitness
• Skin Care Anti Aging
• Hormonal Replacements
• Vitamins
• Supplements
• Herbs

The history of Anti Aging can be dated back to Ancient Egypt where the use of herbs and other remedies were used to promote beauty and longevity. Over the centuries professions like alchemists and scientists developed potions and antidotes to find cures and treat ailments. In cultures like China there has been a long tradition of natural anti aging using diet, herbs, foods and health practices to slow down the signs of aging.

In 2007, the average American life expectancy increased from 47 years of age to 77 years of age. There have been two major factors which have attributed to this increase in age which were the reduction of the number of women who have died in childbirth and advances in medicine for treating diseases. General factors which have attributed to a longer and more youthful life include:
• Hormonal (including bio-identical hormones), such as DHEA, growth hormone, androgens, testosterone, oestrogens;
• Antioxidants, such as vitamins, resveratrol, glutathione, co-enzyme Q10 etc;
• Antiglycators, such as carnosine, aminoguanidine, tenisletam, and cross link-breakers such as Alagebrium (ALT 711);
• Methylators, such as TMG, SAMe;
• Nootropics, such as ginkgo biloba, memantine, bacopa, centrophenoxine, piracetam;
• Anti-agers, such as Deprenyl, melatonin, and caloric restriction mimetics, such as Metformin;
• Lifestyle, including hormesis/stress, brain exercises, physical exercise, calorie restriction, and general health education;
• Technology such as nanotechnology, and genetic technology;
• Treatment for specific age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, osteoporosis;
• Cosmetics against ageing of the skin, such as Botox, Isolagen, collagen, face lifts;
• Less well-accepted such as chelation, human stem cells, cell therapy, immune therapies;
• Complementary treatments such as plants and nutrients which protect against specific illnesses (cassia, rutin etc);
• Treatment of conditions (diabetes, hypothyroidism, menopause, andropause) at a pre-clinical level;
• DNA based supplement research shows repair of defects in our genes

The lady who is reported as having lived the longest, Jeanne Calment, came from a French town and lived to the age of 122 – she died in 1997. There are reports of people who have lived longer, however there is no supporting documentation. Research conducted to find the commonalities between ‘centenarians’ have not found many links, except that they were physically active, did not smoke and maintained about the same weight throughout their adult life. It would seem that a healthy lifestyle could go hand in hand with an Anti Aging lifestyle.
